A Brief Guide to Tennis at CHYC

CHYC’s single tennis court offers a variety of opportunities for recreational and fun tennis for members and their invited guests on its durable hard-court surface. The range of opportunities is described below. For further details, please contact the Tennis Committee Chair. We would love to see lots of people out on the court!

Daily Sign-Up

There is a white board sign-up sheet by the court for one hour time blocks between 9 AM and 5 PM. Members can sign up for one hour of time for the next day starting at 5 PM the prior evening. If the Tennis Committee Chair is not in residence in the Colony to do this, we would appreciate it if the first person to sign up for the following day could note the new day of the week and date for the sign-up. We would very much appreciate it if a member of your tennis party could come and erase their name if they need to cancel an hour reservation, as that makes that hour of time available to others again. Members and their guests can play before 9 AM and after 6 PM on a first-come, first-serve basis without making a reservation.

Court Rules

A few things to remember: Please, no skateboards, bikes, or other vehicles on the tennis court. Second, please do not wear black-soled shoes that will leave a black skid mark as we are trying to maintain the court. Third, there are brooms and rollers on the fence that can help with rolling out puddles if those are remaining after a rain. Last, all participants should be members of CHYC or their guests and are responsible for providing their own tennis balls and other equipment. A full list of court rules is available here.

Tournaments

We are also pleased to be able to offer and organize several fun, informal tournaments for members during the July and August summer season.

The biggest annual tournament in terms of participants is the Anne Parson Mixed Doubles Tournament, scheduled for a Friday to Sunday on a weekend in August (noted in the CHYC Directory calendar or here). This tournament welcomes all tennis players young and old who can maintain a rally back and forth for a few shots and get an overhand serve into the right service court at least roughly 50 percent of the time, in order to make it fun and competitive for all. We try to organize mixed-gender teams, but the numbers do not always allow that.

We also organize smaller tournaments for specific groups of players if there is sufficient interest.

The Jan Sturtevant Women's Round Robin doubles tournament is usually scheduled for one morning in July, and is open to all ages. In July or sometimes August, there is usually a casual Men’s Round Robin doubles tournament, again open to all ages. And last, we try to organize a separate young person’s round robin tournament, for boys and girls ages 12-18. This might be singles or doubles, depending on the interest of the participants.

If we have specific dates for the tournaments prior to the summer, those will be noted in the CHYC Directory calendar of events, also available here. For all the tournaments, the dates and sign-up sheets will be posted at both the CHYC tennis court as well as the clubhouse. For more information on those tournaments, including when they might occur if not specifically noted on the calendar, please contact the Tennis Committee Chair.

We hope to see you all out on the court!
